JUSTMAD 12

Edition 2021

We return

Just a little over a year ago I was writing a text that would open the pages of the JUSTMAD catalogue, talking of social debates and how art responded in the face of the challenges of our times. Today, since that February of 2020, it seems that decades
have passed. Nevertheless, I want to return to that starting point so that JUSTMAD can usher in 2021. A global pandemic has changed us all, but the urgent shouldn’t make us lose sight of the important. JUSTMAD returns with all the health protocols and
maximum safety to continue with its commitment to emerging art, to the works of artists that continue to question us as a society.

It is precisely this overturning of normality that has allowed us to think more deeply about who we are, and, above all, how we want to be. Culture and art have been the lifelines of the lockdown and have been shown to be safe spaces.

Now we return to the fairs and we can get back to enjoying the galleries and their offers, and JUSTMAD wants to do it with its sights set on the future from the present. We introduce very young galleries who are attending the fair for the first time, and they’re doing it with us. This is our present. Our future is to spread their proposals, so that our collectors can get to know them, and so that their artists can grow with each edition. We don’t forget that we are a fair of the present but, above all, of the future.

We’ll blow out twelve candles with the wish of meeting each other again and of continuing our commitment to something so exceedingly vital and necessary as art and culture. Welcome to JUSTMAD.

Dúo Projects

The new curated section DÚO PROJECT has been introduced as a way of supporting the galleries in the face of the complicated context in which we are living with the health crisis. Such a difficult situation needed a formula custom-made to help the gallery sector at JUSTMAD 2021.

In this way, a proposal has been born in which a series of galleries present two artists who converse with each other. A selection of exhibitors made up of very young galleries, some of them barely a year old, and others who are more established that present a new direction or back more contemporary art. The vast majority of galleries in this section are taking part in JUSTMAD for the
first time, offering a refreshed air of new emerging proposals.

With Swinton Gallery (Madrid) we join the multicolour Spray Cocktail Party by Olga de Dios and we reflect on hybridisation with Andrés Senra. La Galería Punto (Valencia) presents two ways of looking beyond photography, with the work of Alberto Feijóo and that of Ana Ciscar.

White Lab (Madrid) literally transforms its stand with the work of Irene Pérez and Pachenco. In the project of Renace Contemporary Art (Baeza), painting is the protagonist, with two very personal approaches, filled with a powerful symbolic charge, by the hands of Silvia Lermo and Miguel Scheroff. At the gallery + (Roma) the pieces of Alonso speak of the intangible and the volatile, while the photographs modified with drawings by Mar Hernández, evoke our memory. Furiosa Gallery (Madrid) brings us the photographs modified with acrylic of Irene Cruz and the delicate works in ink and acrylic of Atauri. The commitment of Est Art Space (Madrid) is to the allegorical and disturbing art of the Lithuanian artist Kristina Stuokaite and the Latvian artist Ksenia Shinkovskaya. The gallery Visión Ultravioleta presents Marcelo Mendonça and Diego de los Reyes with proximity to the body as a space of action and reflection. Espacio Mados presents a dialogue of pictoral abstraction between the artists Lourdes Carrera and María Egea. Martín de Vidales Art combines the work of the sculptor and ceramicist Olga Peñacoba Almayrac and the painter Manuel Domingo Castellanos. In the proposal of Galería Artizar the work of Esther Elena Pea acknowledges the current socio-environmental predicaments, while the work of Romina Rivero investigates aspects
of medicine and philosophy.
